Hello Sue,
Many thanks for an excellent website – Henry Arthur Clifton Harris was my Grandfather – Just a note re your dates – he was born 27th April 1873 and died on 18th October 1946. he married in 1903 Lillian Maude Cunard Cummins and soon after their marriage they moved to Brighton. I do not know whether she was also connected with Homeopathy. Hope this may be of interest. Also I may have a photograph of him (them) if you would like a copy for your records.
Best Regards,
John Harris
Hi John
Thanks for your email, and for this very useful information which I have added to the comments section of your grandfather’s biography.
I would greatly appreciate a photo if you have one.
The homeopathic community values our illustrious ancestors greatly and we have very little information on your grandfather, so any extra information you give us will be treasured.
Thanks again!
Sue
Hello Sue
Here are three photographs which may or may not be of use.
The Harris family were notoriously shy of photographs!
The single undated photograph was taken June 1936 and I would guess that the couple would be around 1944.
I forgot to mention in my original email that my grandmother was also a Doctor who qualified 1897 at Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin.
Best Regards
John
Hi John
Thanks so very much for these 3 photos which I have put in the main biography…
Cheers!
Sue
Hello Sue,
Further to our correspondence re Henry Arthur Clifton Harris I find that on looking through my records I have a note, regrettably source unknown, saying that Henry Harris practiced Homeopathy and was a member of the British Homeopathic Society, and that in 1881 he was President of the Homeopathic Congress. Do you think this could be correct ?
For the record he as you know was the father of Clifton Harris – he was born 25/10/1837 and died 26/04/1895. He had curvature of the spine and was affectionately known as “the little doctor”. He was very active in local politics and represented Brixton for the Liberals on the the London County Council and was President of the Brixton Liberal Association and of the Brixton Liberal Club.
I appreciate that most of this will be irrelevant to you but thought you might be interested in the Homeopathic reference !!
Best Regards,
John
Hi John
Everything is relevant – and thanks a million for all this wonderful extra information!
Sue
Incidentally, you might be interested to know that Lilian Maude Cunard Cummins, LRCPI and LM, LRCSI, resident at 89 Great Russell Street, W.C., was indeed involved in homeopathy: she has the distinction of being only the second “lady practitioner” to join the British HomÅ“opathic Society, having been elected a member in 1900 (Edith Neild was the very first in December 1898). Source: Journal of the BHS, Vol 9, Session 1900-1901, p. ix
Any chance I could get a print-resolution copy of that photo of the two together to illustrate my thesis (since I can not find a photo of Edith Neild)? 🙂
Hi Felix
I have emailed John Harris to ask if he can get in touch with you directly so you can arrange this photo permission between you both…
