Alfred George Wilkinson

Alfred George Wilkinson M.R.C.S. L.S.A. (20 January 1835 – 15 September 1923) was an orthodox British surgeon who converted to homeopathy to become a medical officer at the Northamptonshire Homeopathic Institution, alongside his colleague Arthur Crowen Clifton.

In 1892, Wilkinson was elected as a member of the The British Homeopathic Society.

Before this, in 1868, he was a medical officer and public vaccinator for District 4 of the parish of Birmingham. At the time, Wilkinson and his family were residing at Bath Street, Birmingham.

Alfred George Wilkinson was born in in Birmingham, Warwickshire, on 20 January 1835, the son of Gloucestershire surgeon Henry Wilkinson (1803 – 1867) and Sarah Ann Ashmall (1814 – 1847).

In 1857, Wilkinson was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1866, he was granted his licence by the Society of Apothecaries.

In June 1860, Wilkinson married Anne Susan Elizabeth Pedley (1838 – 1921). They had nine children.

In 1860-1, Wilkinson was listed in the Medical Register at 9 Steel House Lane, Birmingham.

In 1866, Wilkinson was at Sutton Street, Aston Road, Birmingham

Wilkinson worked alongside fellow homeopath Arthur Crowen Clifton at the Northamptonshire Homeopathic Dispensary.

By 1904, Wilkinson was listed in the International Homoeopathic Medical Directory as still practicing at 28 Newland, Northampton.

Alfred George Wilkinson died in Northampton on 15 September, 1923. His Obituary was published in the British Medical Journal:

Dr ALFRED GEORGE WILKINSON, a veteran practitioner, of Northampton, died on September 15th, aged 88. He took the diplomas of M.R.C.S. Eng. in 1857 and of L.S.A. in 1866. While still a student he went to the Crimea as a dresser, and worked with Florence Nightingale; he assisted in attending the wounded after the Charge of the Light Brigade. Dr Wilkinson settled in practice in Northampton in 1870, and he continued at work until a few days before his death.

Oliver Cooper Wilkinson (1866 – 1921), son of Alfred George Wilkinson, was the founder in 1877 of S. E. Wilkinson and Son, Northampton’s oldest independent family Funeral Directors. The company was named after Oliver’s wife, Sarah Elizabeth.
